Immigration Authorities Detain U.S. Murder Suspect at Entry Point

JAKARTA – The Directorate General of Immigration has apprehended a United States national identified as AJP, a fugitive sought by U.S. law enforcement in connection with a murder case. AJP was handed over to the United States Embassy and underwent deportation on Thursday (23/04/2026), under the escort of U.S. Marshals.

The Director General of Immigration, Hendarsam Marantoko, stated that the successful apprehension of this international fugitive was bolstered by the advanced autogate system. "AJP was secured by immigration officers while passing through the autogate at I Gusti Ngurah Rai Airport, Bali, upon arrival from Taipei, Taiwan. Immigration autogates are integrated with the Interpol 24/7 system, ensuring that any Interpol fugitive attempting to enter Indonesia will be immediately detected during immigration clearance," he explained.

Meanwhile, the Director of Immigration Surveillance and Enforcement, Yuldi Yusman, detailed the timeline of the subject's arrival in Indonesia. "On January 17, 2026, AJP—a fugitive in a murder case in South Carolina, USA—arrived in Indonesia via I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport. On January 19, 2026, AJP was transferred to the Directorate General of Immigration for strict surveillance and placed in a detention room for further examination," Yuldi stated. He added that during this process, Immigration maintained intensive coordination with U.S. government representatives to ensure the technical and administrative readiness for the repatriation process.

The Director General of Immigration emphasized that the handling of this case is an implementation of the selective policy principle. "This action demonstrates our commitment to ensuring that only foreign nationals who provide benefits and do not jeopardize public security and order are permitted within Indonesian territory. We also continue to strengthen synergy with domestic law enforcement and international partners, as modern immigration management demands solid transnational collaboration," Hendarsam added.

This enforcement is part of the execution of immigration duties and functions, particularly in surveillance and enforcement. It serves as a concrete manifestation of "Immigration for the People" and reflects Indonesia's commitment to supporting international cooperation in law enforcement and national security.

"The Directorate General of Immigration will continue to enhance professional and accountable immigration surveillance and enforcement, while strengthening international cooperation to safeguard national sovereignty and security," concluded the Director General.  (*)
